TrackMan is not reading shots. Misreads.

Quick Fix

3 reasons for misreads with TrackMan iO

  • Waggle is the most common cause of misreads. Set the club behind the ball longer before you start your swing.  Longer the better.
  • Club head colour.  White club heads are a known issue with TMiO
  • Ball colour.  Use only white balls

The Long Version

We're finding that the technology used in the new TrackMan iO is a bit different than the TM4 ground unit. It looks like the TMiO relies more on the new IR camera.  While this allows much better performance when it comes to reading ball spin and showing club delivery, it is creating issues with more misreads than TM4. Understanding how the tech works will help work around some of these temporary limitations.

We are in direct contact with the TrackMan R&D team and here's what we've learned:

  • Due to overheating, the IR (infrared) light can only be on for 3.5 seconds.
  • The light is triggered by the motion of the clubhead in the hitting zone and automatically turns off.
  • If it turns off when you are waggling the club, there’s a chance that the IR light doesn’t turn on again in time for your swing.

If you are experiencing misreads and you tend to waggle or pump the club prior to hitting the ball, more than likely your waggle/pump is triggering the light to turn on and the light times out by the time you hit the ball.  In some cases the light doesn't turn on depending how much waggle there is.

Obviously this is unacceptable and we have strongly suggested to TrackMan to address this issue.

The last thing we want to do is tell you how to swing but unfortunately, until this problem is fixed by TrackMan, you may need to adjust the way you set the club prior to starting your swing in order to avoid misreads.

The Fix

Prior to hitting the ball, we recommend you set the club behind the ball and pause.  The longer the pause the better.  This will allow the sensor to get the timing of the light to match the impact of the ball. If there was motion prior to setting the club, waiting gives time for the light to turn on again.
